One in ten jobs in the North West of England are now in the creative and digital media industry. The work place is ever changing and now with Manchester rivalling London as the Media Capital of the UK, it is becoming increasingly important to include digital and technical skills into the education of the next generation.

One of our star students is David Hughes. David is in Year 11 and for his work experience week in 2017 he decided to contact GAS Music to enquire about a placement. His professionalism and attitude when contacting the company obviously made a great impression as David was invited in for a full week with them to work in the bustling studios based in the heart of MediaCityUK at The Landing.

After speaking to Gary and Steve (the CEO’s of GAS) we were bursting with pride from hearing the wonderful work that David produced during his short time with the team. During the week David worked on two different projects for clients of GAS Music, one being an advert for Umbro and the other was a Wildlife feature film. Gary’s feedback below showed just how proactive and resourceful David was during his work experience.

“David’s work was a huge help for us and had a big impact on the projects, the foley planner for Umbro was completed in parallel to the composition and hence saved us half a day and the soundtrack review was carried out in a real time viewing session saving us a further 3 hours.” Gary GAS Music.

Like most schools in Britain, we offer Work Experience week to our Year 10s and Year 11s. However… as a technical establishment we pride ourselves on our employer partners and our close knit links with the industry over all four of our pathways (TV,Radio,Graphics & Gaming). So when work experience week crept up on our Year 11s in February we were delighted to hear from numerous companies wanting to work with our young people and give them the opportunities that are rare for 16 year olds. It’s even better when we hear that our students have gone out and found themselves some once in a lifetime placements.

This is just one example of what our 14-16 Year olds can achieve during their GCSE years with us at UTC@MediaCityUK. If you would like to join us or know someone who would,  come and see us on Saturday 18th March for our Open Day 11am-2pm.
