Ever wanted to develop your own game? Want to know how you can get into coding and game production? UTC@MediaCityUK has a course that would suit you! Our BTEC Interactive Media & Gaming course promises to get students ready to work in the gaming industry! Some of our current Year 12’s have proved how good they are already by developing an app that you may be seeing very soon….

In December 2016, Dan Sodergren CEO of Great Marketing Works, came into UTC with a live brief for our Year 12 IMG students. Dan was looking for a mobile game idea (with the potential to be developed) that he could use for his company to help market the UTC.

The live brief consisted of the following factors;

  • A retro game with a demographic of 30-50 Year olds.
  • Use of UTC brand colours
  • Market UTC
  • Mobile App

Dan encouraged the students to be imaginative, and to focus their research on games from the childhoods of the target audience.

On 21st December Dan returned to UTC to hear the pitches from the students joined by a panel of 6 adults all in the age range of 30-50 years old.

The panel (including Dan) were so blown away by the high standard and quality of work that the students produced in such a short space of time that they could not possibly choose just one winner without seeing more!

Dan asked the students (and their wonderful teachers Jordan & Jordan) to go away and develop their game ideas even further ready to be showcased at a live event Dan was planning for January 2017.

The passion and determination of the students wowed not only the panel but numerous other employer partners who attended the showcasing live event in January.

As Dan Sodergren, Digital marketing and technology expert, said “The Quality of the work literally blew me away. The games made were all winners in my mind. All had great thought and showed great promise. We will be back next term with another brief. But by then it would not surprise me that these young people have started their own games development company! Amazing work!”

Off the back of the event our IMG students have landed themselves two more live brief projects and a variety of work experience with gaming, coding and app development companies in and around Manchester!

The final winners decided by the audience at the live event were ‘UTC Rush’.

Their game included everything Dan asked for and was available for guests to play on Mobile devices on the night. Now the game will be developed further and will be going into production for release very soon! So watch this space….
